Creating Courses & Assignments

Create Course

WriteLab courses allow you to manage assignments, populate rosters, and view and grade student writing submissions, all in one place.

  1. Create a Course:
    • Click on the Courses tab and then click the blue "+" button.
    • Title your Course.
    • Enter the Course's term. 
    • Select start and end dates for your Course.
    • Select your institution from the drop-down menu.
    • Click CREATE to go to the next step.
  2. Invite Students (optional):
    • Copy and paste or type your students' email addresses. Email addresses can be separated by commas, spaces, or line breaks.
    • (Optional) Enter a message to accompany the Course invitation.
    • (Optional) Check the CC me on the invite emails box if you want receive a copy of the Course invitation email.
    • Click INVITE to go to the next step.
    • Tip: You can return to this step and invite students and other teachers later. You can also access the Course Invite Code in this step. 
  3. Create assignment (optional):
    • Title your assignment.
    • Add a prompt.
    • Select a due date and time for the assignment.
    • (Optional) Enter a message to accompany the assignment notification email.
    • (Optional) Check the "CC me on the invite email" box if you want receive a copy of the assignment notification email.
    • (Optional) Check the "Create and add another Assignment" box is you want to add another assignment right away.
    • Click CREATE to go to the next step.
  4. Confirm Course:
    • Don't want to create this Course after all? Select "delete this Course."
    • You can edit an existing assignment or add a new assignment.
    • You can also invite more students from this page.
    • Click VIEW COURSE to start using WriteLab.
       

 

While we have updated the WriteLab interface, the process of creating a course (along with inviting students and creating your first assignments) has remained the same. 

 

Edit Course

You can rename your Course or adjust the start and end dates.

  1. Click on your course name from the Dashboard or Courses Tab.
  2. Click the EDIT COURSE button.
  3. Enter a new name, term, or start and end dates for the Course.
  4. Click UPDATE to finish. 
 

Create an Assignment

You can create a new assignment for your course at any time. Use assignments to manage the work students do for your Course. Students' assignment submissions can be found on the assignments page where you can begin the grading process.

You can create assignments complete with prompts, specifications, and due dates. Students can view these details from an automated email message sent to them. 

  1. Click Courses and select the Course for which you want to create an assignment.
  2. Click the + ADD ASSIGNMENT button.
  3. Title your assignment, and add a prompt, specifications, and due date.
  4. (Optional) Write a message to accompany the assignment.
  5. (Optional) Check the CC me on the emails box to receive a copy of the assignment notification email.
  6. Click CREATE. WriteLab will email the assignment to your students.
 

Edit Assignment

You can change the assignment’s prompt, specifications, or due date at any time. Students will receive a notification email when you change an assignment.

  1. Click the Courses Tab and select the appropriate Course. 
  2. Select the appropriate Assignment.
  3. Click the EDIT ASSIGNMENT button to open the Edit Assignment page.
  4. After making changes, click SUBMIT. WriteLab will automatically email your students notifying them that you have updated the assignment.

View Rubric

You can also view the rubric attached to your assignment by clicking on VIEW RUBRIC.

 

Grade Student Work

You can view all student submissions under a given assignment. From here, you can provide feedback and grade their work. 

This grading workflow is designed to help you grade student work faster—and remain objective across each submission.

View Student Work

As a teacher, you can view the work your students submit on the Assignments Page. There are several ways to access student work: clicking on a To Do List item from the Dashboard; clicking on an Assignment from the Dashboard; or clicking on an Assignment from the Course Page.

Here's the workflow from the Courses Tab

  1. Click on the Courses Tab and select the appropriate Course.
  2. Click on the Assignment.
  3. From here, you have the option of clicking on the student's name or the View Feedback button.
  4. This will take you to the Grading Mode.
 

Grading Workflow

The heart of the grading workflow is the Grading Mode. Here, you will see a few things:

  1. The student's essay on the left.
  2. The rubric panel on the right.
  3. The essay score submission box at the bottom of the grading panel.
  4. A navigation bar at the bottom of the page that allows you to move across student submissions.
 

Giving Students Feedback

  1. To begin leaving personalized comments on a student's essay, highlight a snippet of text and you'll see a Message Icon appear. 
  2. This will open a comment box for you to enter your feedback. 
  3. After you have crafted your comment you can click CREATE.
  4. You can easily edit or delete your comment at any time. 

 


 

 
 

Giving Students a Score

After you have left your feedback on the essay you can use the Rubric Panel to give the student a score.

  1. Go through each rubric category and assign a 1 through 5 score.
  2. This will auto populate both a letter and percentage grade.
  3. If you want to override the score, simply enter a numeric value in the Confirm Grade box. 
  4. Click Confirm Grade when you're ready.
 

Revising Scores

Revising scores is easy. You can click on REVISE to make changes to the rubric table or the score override. 

At any point you can go back to the Assignments Page to review your feedback and make changes to your comments and grades.
