SENIOR MACHINE LEARNING ENGINEER (BERKELEY)

At WriteLab, we help students receive immediate feedback and suggestions on their writing. We offer actionable insights on each writer's progress. Instructors can then consistently and fairly assess student writing. We are a VC-backed company.

We are currently developing a state-of-the-art AI engine for English Language Learners (ELL). To accelerate those efforts, you will be our third machine learning engineer on our team, and you'll collaborate closely with colleagues who are experienced in linguistics, deep learning, and design. You will be managing multiple projects and attending regular feature and code reviews. You will make an immediate and meaningful impact on the product. We are also building out proprietary labeled datasets, so you will never be hungry for data.

JOB REQUIRERMENTS

  • Experienced candidates only please—with a minimum 3 years using machine learning in production.
  • MS or Ph.D. in CS, Math, Statistics, or related discipline; or a BS with extensive experience in the field

  • Natural language processing and deep learning experience highly preferred

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Strategize and formulate the technical vision of the company

  • Close the feedback loop by feeding back user data to the machine learning models

  • Lead development efforts on new features on grammatical error correction, ELL issues, essay scoring, etc.

  • Improve WriteLab's core technology using linguistic, machine learning and deep learning methods

  • Scale out training of models to large datasets

  • Run reproducible experiments and perform hyperparameter optimizations

  • Optimize for inference speed so that the product feels snappy

  • Run data annotation projects and data pre-processing pipelines

  • Maintain accuracy of models to high standards

YOUR PROFILE

  • Proven ability to continuously improve machine learning products

  • Stickler for accuracy

  • Ability to conduct practical R&D projects which may have high returns

  • Excellent grasp of the English language

  • Outstanding communication skills and not afraid to criticize flaws of the product

  • Highly motivated, empathetic, and willing to provide or give mentorship as needed
